I believe the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to be very clear and not convoluted when explaining topics, equations, etc. to students, as it can be very easy to get intimated as a student and end up confused. I believe it is also important not to assume any knowledge straight away from students but to intentionally ask what it is…

I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is, teach a student the joy of learning and adapting to new problems on their own. This is so they can progress more by themselves and feel more independent and confident in their learning. I can help keep students engaged, and able to clearly explain things in an understanding way that has…

I think one of the most important things about tutoring is to help students not only understand what they need to do, but also why they need to do it, alongside techniques to perform well in assessments. My biggest strength as a tutor is my ability to explain concepts from the ground up. Because my own understanding of maths and science is built…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is be patient and understanding. Forcing an expectation can create insecurity, which can further decrease a students confidence, and hence academic ability. A friendly, positive attitude will create the most growth, and provide students with the strive to improve and upskill their academic…

I believe the most important thing for a chemistry tutor to do is to keep the student engaged. Often students in tutoring are behind in work because they lose focus in a classroom or simply find it boring. Being able to hone a student's attention to the work will dramatically improve their chances of success. I can often work with different…

It depends a little bit on age but the older they get the more important confidence is going to be and giving the students confidence is the most important job. I'm not going to teach a 12 year old a lot more, they have spent years in school and they have all the knowledge they need. The important job of tutor is to make them believe that they…

I believe explaining a concept in such a way that the student understands it intuitively and can thus use that understanding to solve different problems, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts, is an incredibly important part of being a chemistry tutor. The tutor should be adding to a student's toolkit such that they can solve a…

The sole priority of the tutor is to do anything they can to continually further the skills and success of their student. However this has to be achieved in a reasonable way. Every student has a different learning style and a different ability level. I am able to adapt the way I tutor to suit these different styles and ensure the proper…

Offer advice from personal experience. Tutors who have been through the same schooling system can guide students in the best way to approach material, and how best to prepare for assessment. Also, tutors can provide students with alternative approaches to difficult material other than what is given by the student's regular schoolteacher. I have a…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is be there for students at their bad times and not ridicule them. If a student has a bad time and cannot fully focus on studies, a tutor should help them and understand that its not the person but the situation that is leading to this. A tutor should go to the full extent to help the student get…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

Teach students HOW to learn in future. Give them techniques to implement into their everyday school routine that will, in the long run, benefit their understanding. I believe it is equally important to really listen to students properly. As someone who has received tutoring before, when your tutor misinterprets you, it is difficult to get to the…

Inside ComoTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on mastering multiplication tables up to 12 and practiced reading and drawing times on analog clocks.

For Year 8, Jessica focused on solving equations algebraically—showing all steps clearly—and revised lowest common denominators in fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Liam tackled index laws through targeted practice questions and explored exponential functions, applying rules to different sequences.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for a test struggled with time management—she ran out of time to check answers in algebra, so small sign errors went unnoticed.

In Year 8 maths, messy working and unclear layout led to confusion during fraction calculations, making it harder to spot calculation slips or follow the method.

For a Year 3 learner, organization was an issue; forgetting their math notebook meant important notes weren't recorded, impacting revision later.

Meanwhile, a senior student focused mostly on easy textbook questions in Venn Diagrams and neglected the tougher ones, missing out on vital exam practice.

Recent Achievements

One Como tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's willingness to do homework; after weeks of leaving tasks unfinished, he arrived at his session with practice questions completed and specific areas ready for discussion.

A Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask for help came prepared this week with her own list of questions about index laws and even requested harder examples on scientific notation.

In primary, one student who'd been mixing up hours and minutes on an analog clock finally explained the difference without prompting, then drew the correct time twice in a row during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as South Perth Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collier Primary School.
