I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel safe, so they're comfortable opening up and can actually enjoy learning instead of dreading it. Once that trust is there, communication comes easily, concepts become easier to understand, and the student naturally becomes more willing to learn rather than feeling like it's…

Offer advice from personal experience. Tutors who have been through the same schooling system can guide students in the best way to approach material, and how best to prepare for assessment. Also, tutors can provide students with alternative approaches to difficult material other than what is given by the student's regular schoolteacher. I have a…

The most important thing to prevent students from getting frustrated. We serve as a guide to lead them away from dead ends, or from developing bad habits. We show them the shortcuts (and why they work!!). We explain how it is all linked. As one on one, we can start at their level and go back to the basics if we need to. Mathematics is a…

I believe it is a tutor's role to help students understand the ideas behind the questions, rather than just memorising how to write an answer. Once they understand the concept, everything else becomes easier and more logical. It is also important for a tutor to support and encourage students, especially when they feel stuck or discouraged. By…

It's important to provide your student with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subject and to ensure that they are confident and well-prepared to answer the more difficult questions that may present themselves in an exam or test. However, it's equally as important to understand that all students are different in how they learn best and…

Communication between student and teacher is the key. If there is a gap between them the teaching learning system can never go ahead as smoothly as it should have to be. the most important things a tutor can do for a student is uplift them knowledge wise as well as in person. To give them knowledge while instilling good habits and ethics. To make them grow into a better version of themselves. I'm good at keeping the class knowledgeable yet interesting at the same time. I have a sharp eye, so it is easier for me to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for students at their bad times and not ridicule them. If a student has a bad time and cannot fully focus on studies, a tutor should help them and understand that its not the person but the situation that is leading to this. A tutor should go to the full extent to help the student get better at…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

Teach students HOW to learn in future. Give them techniques to implement into their everyday school routine that will, in the long run, benefit their understanding. I believe it is equally important to really listen to students properly. As someone who has received tutoring before, when your tutor misinterprets you, it is difficult to get to the…

Inside ComoTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on mastering multiplication tables up to 12 and practiced reading and drawing times on analog clocks.

For Year 8, Jessica focused on solving equations algebraically—showing all steps clearly—and revised lowest common denominators in fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Liam tackled index laws through targeted practice questions and explored exponential functions, applying rules to different sequences.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for a test struggled with time management—she ran out of time to check answers in algebra, so small sign errors went unnoticed.

In Year 8 maths, messy working and unclear layout led to confusion during fraction calculations, making it harder to spot calculation slips or follow the method.

For a Year 3 learner, organization was an issue; forgetting their math notebook meant important notes weren't recorded, impacting revision later.

Meanwhile, a senior student focused mostly on easy textbook questions in Venn Diagrams and neglected the tougher ones, missing out on vital exam practice.

Recent Achievements

One Como tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's willingness to do homework; after weeks of leaving tasks unfinished, he arrived at his session with practice questions completed and specific areas ready for discussion.

A Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask for help came prepared this week with her own list of questions about index laws and even requested harder examples on scientific notation.

In primary, one student who'd been mixing up hours and minutes on an analog clock finally explained the difference without prompting, then drew the correct time twice in a row during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as South Perth Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collier Primary School.
