A tutor's primary aim is to instill confidence in the student. Students seek tutors for a variety of reasons. Maybe the student is struggling and needs someone to explain things more clearly. A wise and patient tutor will do that, and the student will feel more confident; that they can do it! Some students come to tutoring with no real problems,…

Putting down your ego, communicate and being there for them is definitely the top priority. They will obviously get discouraged at times when they don't get the answers. But I believe with patience, they are destined to get what they want. I think my passion and hunger to understand a problem stands out from other people the most. In every…

A tutor must be well prepared and organised, prepared in not just knowing the material in and out so that they can teach confidently but also being able to provide the necessary material for the student beforehand which can maximise how much the student takes away. So thoughtfully planning the tutoring session beforehand or being familiar with…

One of the most important thing to do is to understand what the student needs. Through careful evaluation a tutor should identify the student's weakness and put more focus on that area. Another important thing is to always address their questions. Sometimes my students asked me questions which I did not know the answer to, so I looked up on the…

For me, the two things that aided me most when I was being tutored in highschool were practice questions given to me by tutors and when these tutors took their time to really deconstruct these concepts until I fully understood them. My biggest strength is patience. Sometimes it takes students a long time to begin to understand certain concepts and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence. Once students begin to believe they are capable, their willingness to learn and solve problems improves naturally. A tutor should create a safe environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and thinking critically. Rather than simply…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is creating an environment and relationship where the student understands and feels comfortable knowing that it is okay not to understand something and it is ok to ask for, or need help. I believe that still being a student myself allows me to relate to students and the frustrations…

The best way to help a student learn to assist them in breaking down the problems they face. Whether it be breaking down the question, time management or controlling stress levels, the most important aspect of tutoring is to strengthen their fundamental skills. I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

I believe explaining a concept in such a way that the student understands it intuitively and can thus use that understanding to solve different problems, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts, is an incredibly important part of being a tutor. The tutor should be adding to a student's toolkit such that they can solve a variety of…

To me, the two most important things a tutor can do for a student are: 1. Providing a student with a strong base understanding of a topic so that they can succeed in learning while at school (e.g. contributing well to class discussions). 2. Helping a student refine and better understand what they were taught in class. I think I have a strong…

A tutor must be a friend and a tutor at the same time.So that, the students can ask their doubts without any inhibition. At the same time, a tutor should understand the weak points of a student and help them in tackling that. A tutor needs to have a good understanding of the content to help cater to the students' needs. By suggesting or providing different resources (e.g. alternative text books, handouts, video clips or study cards), the student can widen their methods of learning and access to resources. A tutor needs to be a relatable individual, who gets along…

I think the most important things I can do for a student revolve around mentorship. Being a tutor is not just about imparting information and tips to the student. It is recognising the student as a whole, looking after their mental wellbeing, and ensuring that what they're learning is being tailored to them, rather than a cookie-cut approach. A…

I consider the time and space a tutor gives to the student the most important thing. It is all about what they, as the student, are comfortable with. However, this does not stop another important aspect; pushing a student through their limits in order to achieve their goals. These are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. I…

Inside HiltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ruby revised division strategies, focusing on inverse operations and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 using the written method.

For Year 5, Ashton worked through fractions with different denominators as well as decimal addition and subtraction.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ella practised measurement conversions between kilograms and grams along with regular mental maths exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student faced confusion completing a fraction number line revision sheet, as noted: "there was some question on how to complete it," and did not seek clarification from their teacher—this hesitation delayed progress.

In Year 10 maths, another student needed repeated reminders to check working out, especially when handling area calculations for irregular shapes; missed steps led to incorrect answers that went unnoticed until review.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner avoided verbalising column values during addition tasks, which made it harder to spot mistakes and slowed development of place value understanding.

Each scenario left students less confident heading into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Hilton tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to rush through maths problems is now double-checking subtraction answers by adding back, catching mistakes before moving on.

In another session, a Year 7 student—who'd previously guessed at fraction questions—successfully simplified different types of fractions without prompting and explained the process aloud.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated to read out loud completed an entire reading comprehension passage with only minimal help and answered all follow-up questions independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Willagee Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hilton Primary School.
