I believe explaining a concept in such a way that the student understands it intuitively and can thus use that understanding to solve different problems, rather than simply rote-learning a series of facts, is an incredibly important part of being a tutor. The tutor should be adding to a student's toolkit such that they can solve a variety of…

Make sure the student is calm and doesn't panic when confronted woith a problem and show them how to break down the steps to solve the problem bit by bit. I try to get the student to do their own work to ensure they know what to do. Listening to me, watching and asking questions at first but then to do it themselves to make sure they can do…

A tutor should provide a student with additional resources; have a positive, encouraging attitude and make sure to be understanding of the student's needs. The tutor should also be able to lift the student's confidence, as sometimes this can make all the difference. I am a patient, reliable, organised individual and I am willing to help students,…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student having the ability to take pressure off the students. Having only graduated from school last year, going to tutoring for the subjects I had trouble in, took some of the pressures of Year 12 off of my shoulders as I had the reassurance that I could go to my tutors with concepts I had trouble…

My biggest strength is patience. Sometimes it takes students a long time to begin to understand certain concepts and…

The first thing would be to establish a plan of goals and expectations and help the student identify their role in this plan. Once a tutor has an idea of the expectation of the parents/school/ students then only can progress take shape, and this might have many forms and variations as to how this is executed as the student grows or stalls. So,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student to is support the student to the best of their abilities and to also believe in the student. Supporting the student to the best of their abilities means that the student will have more assistance for their tutors to achieve their goals. And we as tutors must believe in the abilities…

Doing everything possible to get the true picture of the subject matter to the understanding of the student. The most important thing a tutor can be is patient and understanding of the fact that the student may not pick up the concept as quickly as they did when they first learnt it. A tutor can build a child's confidence, boost them to achieve higher. Help them to ask questions because they will learn from that. Furthermore if it is hard for a student to understand something, a tutor should try a different approach so that the student understands better. The tutor should come up with new learning strategies. As a tutor the…

I believe providing an environment in which the student is confident and motivated about what they are learning will help them achieve goals. Our daughter Meg has been struggling with multiplication and generally not interested in math at all. Since Angela has been tutoring Meg (for a few weeks now) we have seen a huge improvement in her math. Angela has a very gentle, friendly and patient approach in the way she teaches and puts a lot of thought and effort into her work i.e. she brings along many props. a white board, worksheets and visuals to make it easier for Meg to learn different strategies. Meg thinks she's great and really enjoys her lessons. Meg is also doing much better at school to. Angela is amazing at what she does and we couldn't be happier! We definitely recommend her to anyone who is looking for a tutor.

Inside PalmyraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Abbi focused on factorising and simplifying algebraic expressions, then moved on to solving quadratic equations using methods like completing the square and the quadratic formula.

Year 9 Isabel worked through trigonometry problems and revised for exams by tackling practice questions involving parabolas, simultaneous equations, and rationalising surds.

Meanwhile, Year 4 Jimmy practiced rounding numbers using number lines for visualization, completed long division challenges, and reinforced essay writing skills by drafting structured body paragraphs together.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, Isabel often skipped working steps and rushed through long equations, leading to small errors: "She tends to solve things the 'hard' way without stopping and thinking about the best method." This cost marks in algebra and turning point problems.

For Year 10 Maths, Abbi struggled with worded quadratic questions—she found it difficult to extract key information and convert it into equations, especially after longer breaks from practice.

In Year 5 English, Jimmy's highlighting was unfocused; when asked to find important words in a passage, he highlighted almost everything, making reading slow and overwhelming.

Recent Achievements

One Palmyra tutor noticed Isabel's steady shift towards independence in Year 10 maths: after struggling with worded problems, she recently scored 81% on her exam—up from 60%—and now tackles most application questions solo.

In a recent session, Abbi (Year 11) moved from needing help to solving standard quadratic equations entirely on her own, even showing initiative by attempting harder simultaneous equation tasks without prompting.

Meanwhile, Jimmy (Year 4) made a leap in essay writing; he previously needed step-by-step guidance but managed to complete a full body paragraph himself for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond Primary School.
