The best thing that a tutor can do for a student is not to regurgitate information - that can be found by reading a book, or browsing the internet; but to inspire. I believe that a perspective can be most powerfully shared by someone who has seen and understood, who can empathize with the struggles that are necessary to get to seeing the solution…

The most important I as a tutor can do is to accept that each student has a different way of learning and I should adapt and blend their teaching methods according to the student, there's no one size fits all method for everyone. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them understand the course content- so they can pass assessment- and also to help them understand other aspects of the subject they need or want to understand, either for the sake of curiosity or because they have some use for it. It is best if this understanding is of a deep…

Tutoring is mainly about facilitating the students understanding of concepts, but the tutor should also aim to foster a drive in the student to understand why they are struggling with the respective topic and a will to seek a solution on their own. The tutor should eventually seek to equip students with self-awareness and a drive for…

Whilst a tutor is only present with their student for a limited time, they can help by providing a clear understanding of what the syllabus wants and giving resources. They are also there to answer and clarify a student’s questions and assist in developing a structured work routine. Since I have recently completed the HSC and have studied the…

I think an important role tutor must be able to do is to be able to adaptable in their teaching style to cater to the needs of students. Additionally being relatable and exploring how this knowledge can be expanded to world wide applications. A tutor should realize that once upon a time, they themselves were a student who must have struggled with certain subjects and also fared well in certain other subjects. And they should realize from their own experience how much of a difference can a good teacher bring into the lives of students. A good tutor will leverage their own experience as…

I find it important for tutors to be able to make a student comfortable to ask them questions and to give wrong answers. Inside Bexley NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Breana focused on solving simultaneous equations both graphically and algebraically, and also worked through break-even point and revenue/loss graphs using textbook and HSC-style questions.

Year 9 Aiya revised how to calculate the circumference, radius, and diameter of circles, then applied percentage calculations to real-life scenarios she came up with.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Melia tackled quadratic equations and non-linear functions by breaking down classwork step-by-step, ensuring understanding of solving quadratic models and their applications.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, a student often left homework incomplete or delayed, making it harder to recall methods during lessons—"if you leave it for a few weeks, it's difficult to remember how to do it."

In Year 10 algebra sessions, working out was sometimes skipped or not clearly written line by line, which hid where mistakes crept in and slowed feedback.

One Year 7 student relied heavily on calculators for basic questions rather than practicing mental calculation as suggested.

In senior years, revision was sometimes limited to familiar topics instead of targeting weaker areas before assessments, leading to repeated confusion under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bexley North noticed that a Year 10 student who previously struggled with algebraic equations is now confidently explaining the steps out loud and identifying patterns without prompting.

In another recent session, a Year 8 student who often hesitated to ask for help began actively requesting clarification on tricky time difference questions, showing real initiative compared to earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, one primary student made a breakthrough by not only recalling her times tables quicker than before but also completing long division problems independently at the end of the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley North Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bexley North Public School.
