For families approaching NAPLAN for the first time, this page helps you look beyond a Numeracy total. The worked steps can show whether your child misunderstood the question, chose the wrong operation, made a calculation slip or forgot to check the answer.

Start with the question paper and keep the worked solutions closed until your child finishes. Do not interrupt to correct mistakes. At this age, let your child choose a method and show enough working for you to follow it later.

 

Open the matching answer key and worked solutions after the attempt so your child can compare methods, units and checking steps.

 

While you review the paper together, keep the working, units and calculator choices visible so you can see where the method changed direction.

What Year 3 NAPLAN Numeracy covers

NAPLAN Numeracy draws on number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. These practice tests help your child recognise the mathematics, choose a method, show enough working to understand an error, and check whether the answer is reasonable.

 

NAPLAN Numeracy assesses the application of mathematical knowledge, skills, procedures and processes. Official descriptions cover number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability, with understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning all involved.

 

Year 3 Numeracy is online and can include multiple-choice, text-entry and technology-enhanced items. The practice review should preserve working even where the final answer is entered digitally.

 

The six cards below explain the main parts of Year 3 Numeracy in parent-friendly terms. Read the cards that match what you saw in your child’s work. You do not need to explain every mistake or use every card.

 

Year 3 is the first scheduled NAPLAN year. The six Numeracy cards below explain what a parent can look for without expecting the child to understand assessment language.

 

At this level, a parent can help by asking what the numbers mean and letting the child show the method with objects, drawings or working.

Year 3 Numeracy skill map

1. Place value and number relationships

What this part checks: Reading, representing, comparing and partitioning whole numbers, including noticing the value of each digit and simple odd-even relationships.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Choose the representation of a three-digit number, order several numbers, or find the number that is 10 more or 100 less.

 

What to look for afterwards: Did the student confuse a digit with its place value, read the number inaccurately, or lose the direction of the comparison?

2. Addition, subtraction and equal groups

What this part checks: Using addition and subtraction with small whole numbers, and recognising multiplication or division in equal groups, arrays and sharing situations.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Select the operation for a short story problem, complete an array, or work out how many objects are in several equal groups.

 

What to look for afterwards: Was the operation chosen from the relationship in the problem, or from one familiar word? Did the calculation match the model?

3. Fractions and number patterns

What this part checks: Recognising halves, quarters and eighths of shapes, collections and familiar quantities, and continuing increasing or decreasing patterns.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Identify one quarter of a collection, select an equivalent shaded part, or continue a pattern with a stated change.

 

What to look for afterwards: Can the student explain what the whole is? Did they count equal parts, or only look at the shape of a piece?

4. Measurement, money and time

What this part checks: Comparing and measuring length, mass and capacity, reading simple scales and clocks, using money, and ordering or calculating familiar durations.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Read a clock, choose a sensible unit, add coin values, or use a simple calendar to determine when an event occurs.

 

What to look for afterwards: Did the student read the scale interval correctly, include the unit, and check that the answer is realistic for the situation?

5. Shapes, objects and location

What this part checks: Naming and comparing two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects, recognising features, and following positional language on maps or plans.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Match an object to its features, combine shapes, or follow a route using words such as left, beside and between.

 

What to look for afterwards: Was the answer based on a defining feature or only on appearance? Did the student keep orientation consistent while reading the map?

6. Tables, picture graphs and simple chance

What this part checks: Reading and comparing data in tables, tally displays and picture graphs, including displays where one symbol may represent more than one item.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Use a key to find a total, compare two categories, or classify an everyday event by how likely it is.

 

What to look for afterwards: Did the student read the title and key before calculating? If a symbol represented several items, was that value applied every time?

Illustrative problem: see how the explanation should work

A class has 6 tables with 4 students at each table. How many students are seated?

A strong explanation identifies equal groups, calculates 6 x 4 = 24, and checks that six groups of four make sense. If a child adds 6 + 4, the issue is likely choosing the operation rather than basic calculation.

 

This example is separate from the practice tests, so you can discuss it without giving away an answer from the papers.

 

Keep the discussion short and let your child do most of the explaining. Ask why the operation or relationship fits before discussing the calculation. The explanation will often show whether the mathematics is understood. You can also ask: Which step made the answer more or less reasonable?

After Practice Test 1: Year 3 Numeracy

Begin with something your child handled well, then discuss one repeated difficulty in simple language.

 

Ask: Which step made the answer more or less reasonable?

  • Together, redo one missed question without looking at the answer, then compare the two methods.
  • For a short follow-up, change the numbers in that question and see whether your child can use the same idea again.
  • Before you finish, ask for an estimate or another check that would have caught the original error.

Do not turn every missed question into homework. Choose one repeated problem that you can explain clearly, then practise it in a small task.

 

Choose one small activity, keep it manageable, and stop before practice becomes a source of distress.

Your role with a Year 3 child

  • Choose a quiet, ordinary workspace and remove unrelated distractions.
  • Explain that the practice is for learning how the test works. One paper cannot prove how clever a child is.
  • Help with opening, printing or navigating the material, but avoid coaching individual answers.

A total from an Ezy Math Year 3 Numeracy practice test is not an official NAPLAN scale score. For a useful next step, use your child’s work rather than a comparison with the national percentage.

What should I notice first in a Year 3 Numeracy attempt?

For the first review, start with the working. Find the first step where the method stopped matching the problem, then check whether the same kind of issue appears elsewhere.

When should my child open Year 3 Numeracy Practice Test 2?

A short, calm learning block is more useful at this age than repeating a complete test the next day. Before another full paper, choose one mathematical idea and one checking habit from the first paper. Give both time to improve before using another complete test.
