How much tutoring does your child need?

How to use HSC Investigating Science Past Papers

An Investigating Science answer usually goes wrong in one of three places: you used the wrong scientific term, skipped the evidence or wrote about the case study instead of the question. When you mark your work, find the first place this happened. That is what you should practise next.

The unfiltered bottom line

  • Your evidence needs a job. Use a result or pattern from the question and explain exactly how it strengthens or weakens the conclusion.
  • Reliability, validity and accuracy aren’t synonyms. Match the term to consistent results, a fair test or closeness to the accepted value.
  • A memorised case study won’t rescue the wrong answer. Change what you know to fit the command word, the evidence supplied and the scientific issue being tested.

1. Work out what the question wants

Circle the command word before you write. Are you being asked to describe data, explain a pattern, judge an investigation or suggest an improvement? If the question is about reliability, validity, accuracy or ethics, write that focus in the margin. Your answer now has one clear job.

2. Use one strong piece of evidence

When you see a graph, table or set of results, choose the value or pattern that best answers the question. State what it shows and why it matters. You don’t need to repeat every number. Mention an anomaly only when it changes how confident you can be in the conclusion.

3. Learn investigations, not scripts

Know a small number of investigations well enough to discuss their variables, sampling, measurements, ethics and possible improvements. Then practise changing your answer to suit the question. The same investigation may be used to test your understanding of method, limitations, evidence or design.

4. Use scientific terms exactly

Reliability is about the consistency of results. Validity is about whether the method fairly tests what it claims to test. Accuracy is about how close a measurement is to the true or accepted value. Match the word to the actual problem in the investigation instead of using the three terms as if they mean the same thing.

5. Fix the first weak sentence

After you mark your work, find the first sentence where the evidence is missing or the explanation becomes vague. Rewrite that part in fewer, clearer words. Then try a similar question without looking at the old answer. That tells you whether you fixed the skill or simply remembered the correction.

Keep the next step small: Do one data question and one longer question each week, then choose the next task from your error log. Return to the same weakness in another paper a few days later. A fresh question is the best check that the skill has actually improved.
