This is a report about children, parents and tutoring – not a business performance report. It uses EzyMath’s operational evidence to answer practical questions: Why do families seek help? What do tutors work on? What do parents say makes a difference? And how can a family tell whether tutoring is useful?

Parents are rarely looking for more school. They are looking for a clearer explanation, a safe place to ask questions, help with a specific pressure, and enough structure for a student to start moving again.

There is deliberately no single business reporting period behind these sources. The tutoring hours and lesson-note analysis use a recent six-month operational snapshot. Testimonials come from a longer approved collection. Parent-call transcripts are a targeted recent sample drawn from a much larger history of conversations. Public resource activity is filtered to Australian users. Each source is used only for the question it can reasonably answer.

The rounded counts describe the evidence reviewed. They are not intended to disclose EzyMath’s customer numbers, revenue, commercial performance or value. No identifying student information is published.

What this report can and cannot say

  • It can describe recurring topics, parent concerns, tutor observations and family feedback.
  • It can show how one Australian tutoring platform sees the market in practice.
  • It cannot act as a national census of every tutor or every family.
  • It cannot prove that tutoring caused a mark, confidence change or school outcome.

Executive summary

Tutoring is often discussed as if it were one product with one purpose. The evidence says otherwise. A Year 5 student who has lost confidence with fractions, a Year 9 student trying to catch up in algebra, and a Year 12 student preparing for an exam may all use the word tutoring, but they need different things.

Main finding

Useful tutoring is not just subject knowledge delivered for an hour. It is the combination of a clear starting problem, explanations the student can follow, a relationship in which questions feel safe, and a practical rhythm that can be sustained.

Six findings

  1. Families come with both academic and practical needs. Catch-up, tests, homework, confidence, extension and additional learning needs sit alongside questions about timing, format, affordability and tutor availability.
  2. Maths is the centre of gravity. It is by far the most common subject in the operational sample, with algebra, assessment preparation, arithmetic and fractions appearing repeatedly in lesson notes.
  3. Explanation is the work. Tutors most often described explanation and reasoning when recording what went well. Parents also praised tutors who could explain the same idea in a different way.
  4. Confidence is part of learning, not a decorative extra. It appears in parent requests, tutor observations and approved testimonials. A student who is less afraid to attempt a problem has more chances to practise and improve.
  5. Fit matters because learning is social. Families regularly valued patience, calmness, comfort, rapport and communication. A student must be willing to show what they do not understand.
  6. Hours alone are not progress. A useful review asks whether the student can explain, apply, check and transfer what they have learned with less help than before.

1. The Australian education context

Australian students are not one group with one result. The latest national data shows both a broad base of capable students and a substantial group that needs more support.

ACARA reported that around two in three students were at the Strong or Exceeding proficiency levels across reading, numeracy and writing in the 2025 NAPLAN results. Approximately one in ten were at the Needs additional support level across year groups and domains.[1] That is not a story of universal failure. It is a story of wide variation inside the same classrooms, schools and communities.

The OECD’s PISA 2022 country note found that 74% of Australian 15-year-olds reached at least Level 2 in mathematics, above the OECD average. At the same time, Australian mathematics and reading performance remained more than 25 points below early-2000s levels, and the mathematics gap between the most and least socio-economically advantaged quarters was 101 score points.[2]

Australia is also working through a recognised teacher workforce shortage under the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan.[3] Tutoring should not be sold as a replacement for schools or teachers. Its useful role is narrower and more practical: extra time for one student to ask questions, rebuild a foundation, prepare for a pressure point or work at a pace that may be hard to provide in a full classroom.

Why tutoring records add something

National assessments show performance at selected points in time. Lesson records and parent conversations show what families are dealing with between those assessments – the topic that is stuck, the test that is approaching, the confidence that has dropped and the practical conditions that determine whether support can happen.

2. What families are asking for

Parents do not usually start a tutoring conversation because tutoring sounds interesting. They call because something has become hard, urgent or uncertain. A targeted sample of recent call transcripts, drawn from a much larger archive of parent conversations, shows six recurring jobs.

Catch-up

A student has missed a foundation, feels behind or no longer understands what is happening in class.

Assessment preparation

A test, NAPLAN, senior-school assessment or exam creates a deadline and makes gaps more visible.

Homework and schoolwork

The family needs help turning the school’s current work into something the student can actually complete and understand.

Confidence and anxiety

Avoidance, fear of being wrong or a belief that ‘I am bad at maths’ has become part of the learning problem.

Additional learning needs

The student needs more time, more repetition, a different explanation or a calmer setting than the usual classroom can provide.

Extension

Some families are not trying to repair a weakness. They want challenge, deeper understanding or a stronger pathway into advanced work.

Practical fit is part of educational fit

Timing, location, online or in-person preference, affordability and availability appeared alongside academic concerns. A tutor can be excellent on paper and still be the wrong choice if the arrangement cannot work calmly and consistently in family life.

This is why a useful first conversation should not stop at ‘What subject?’ It should also ask what has changed, where the student gets stuck, what success would look like, what the student thinks is wrong, and what schedule is genuinely realistic.

 

3. Tutoring across Australia and through school

The enquiry evidence includes Australian families from every state and territory. Many records did not contain a reliable state field, so this report does not publish regional rankings or volumes. The useful conclusion is national breadth, not a league table.

Different school stages bring different pressures

Primary students often need foundations, fluency and confidence. In the middle years, algebra, fractions, problem solving and the jump in subject complexity become more visible. Senior students are more likely to arrive with assessment deadlines, advanced content and a need to connect several years of knowledge quickly.

Secondary-school years are strongly represented in the tutoring-hour sample, but support also runs through primary school and into Year 12. The lesson evidence suggests that the market is not split neatly into ‘catch-up’ and ‘high achievement’. Both can exist in the same year level, subject or even the same student.

Maths dominates, but it is not the whole picture

Maths accounted for roughly five in every six completed tutoring hours in the operational sample. English was the next largest area, with science subjects also present. This makes the dataset especially useful for understanding maths tutoring, while the English and science findings should be read more cautiously.

A parent-facing interpretation

The most useful question is not whether a year level is ‘hard’. It is which prerequisite the student needs for the work in front of them. A Year 10 algebra problem may really be a fractions problem. An exam problem may really be a planning or checking problem.

4. What happens inside live lessons

More than 16,000 recent live-lesson notes provide a view that surveys rarely capture: what tutors and students were actually working on. The chart below shows the share of notes containing each topic theme. A single lesson can cover several themes, so the bars do not add to 100%.

Algebra appears most often, followed by tests and exams, number and arithmetic, and fractions, decimals and percentages. The pattern makes sense. Algebra sits at the centre of secondary maths, while arithmetic and fractions are prerequisites that keep resurfacing when students meet harder work.

Assessment pressure reaches into ordinary lessons

Tests and exams appeared in about one in six notes. That does not mean every lesson was test coaching. It means assessments frequently shape the immediate focus – revising a topic, practising a question type, checking errors or working out what the student does not yet understand.

Writing, grammar and spelling also appeared in the coded notes. Because this operational sample is dominated by maths, the English figures should not be treated as a national comparison of literacy needs.

5. Learning signals tutors notice

Lesson notes usually contain more than a list of topics. Tutors also record what went well and what needs attention. These observations are not standardised tests, but they show the learning behaviours that recur in one-to-one work.

Explanation and reasoning was the strongest positive theme. That matters because a student who can explain why a method works is usually doing more than copying steps. Study habits and organisation, by contrast, were the most prominent next-focus theme. The academic problem is often tied to planning, preparation, homework routines and follow-through.

The same theme can be a strength and a weakness

Confidence, engagement, checking and memory appear on both sides of the chart. That is not a contradiction. A student may be confident in one topic and hesitant in another. They may concentrate well during guided practice but struggle to begin alone. Useful notes describe the condition and the next step rather than assigning a permanent label.

What a good lesson note does

It should tell a parent what was covered, what the student could do, where support was still needed and what comes next. ‘Good lesson’ is pleasant but not very useful. ‘Could solve linear equations with one prompt, but still needs to check negative signs’ is useful.

6. What families say makes tutoring useful

Approved testimonials are not a neutral survey. They are positive comments selected for publication, so they cannot tell us the success rate of tutoring. They can still answer a different question: when families are happy enough to say something publicly, what do they value?

Clear explanations were the most common coded theme. Perceived academic progress, enjoyment, confidence, tutor fit and communication followed closely enough to tell a coherent story: families do not separate the academic result from the relationship that made the work possible.

The excerpts on the following pages were checked against approved testimonial records. Names were removed and wording was lightly edited for privacy and readability. They illustrate recurring experiences; they do not guarantee the same result for every student.

These comments point to a simple but important sequence. A clearer explanation can make the work feel possible. Feeling that the work is possible makes it easier to attempt. Repeated attempts create more opportunities to learn. Confidence is not the same as achievement, but it can change the student’s willingness to do the work that achievement requires.

Parents notice teaching quality, but they also notice whether the tutor is calm, prepared, reliable and able to communicate. These are not separate from learning. A strong relationship makes it easier to expose mistakes, ask for another explanation and keep working when a question is uncomfortable.

7. What meaningful progress should look like

Hours are not the outcome. They are the space in which the work happens. A family can spend many hours on tutoring without solving the original problem if the goal is vague, the student remains dependent on prompts or the lesson work never transfers back to school.

Look for learning that becomes more independent

  • Explain: The student can describe the idea or method in their own words, not only repeat the tutor’s steps.
  • Apply: The student can use the idea on a question that looks different from the example.
  • Check: The student notices errors, checks signs, units or working, and can say why an answer is reasonable.
  • Start: The student begins with less avoidance and needs fewer prompts to choose a first step.
  • Transfer: The skill appears in homework, classwork, tests or teacher feedback, not only in the tutoring session.
  • Plan: The student knows the next focus and can see how today’s work connects to the larger goal.

Use a baseline and a review point

At the start, record one or two concrete examples: a recent test, a school task, a short set of questions, or the student’s own explanation of what is hard. After several weeks, revisit the same skill with new questions. Comparing like with like is more useful than asking only whether tutoring ‘feels good’.

A fair progress question

Compared with the starting point, can the student now do more of the thinking with less support – and can they use it outside the lesson?

Marks matter when the original goal is assessment performance, but they are noisy. Test difficulty, school marking, illness and topic changes can move a score. Use marks alongside work samples, tutor notes, student explanations and teacher feedback.

Fit

A tutor can be academically capable and still be the wrong match. Fit includes communication style, rapport, subject and year-level confidence, delivery mode, travel and the student’s comfort in asking questions. Testimonials repeatedly reference tutor fit and rapport, while sales calls show that online versus in-person preference is material. Early rematching should be normalised when the relationship is not clicking.

Rhythm

Tutoring cannot build momentum if sessions are repeatedly moved, skipped or squeezed between other commitments. Scheduling was the most common parent-side theme in sales calls. Rhythm means a realistic recurring time that works for the student, family and tutor. It is less about maximising weekly hours than protecting a routine.

Focus

The first lessons should not feel aimless. A clear starting focus might be a missed foundation, an upcoming assessment, confidence with algebra or a plan for homework. It need not be a hard promise of grade improvement within three weeks. It should be a specific direction that allows the student, tutor and parent to recognise early progress.

9. What Australian families look for online

Tutoring is only one part of how families seek support. Australia-filtered public-page analytics show strong use of textbooks, worksheets, maths tests, past papers, NAPLAN practice and assessment resources. The chart uses an index rather than publishing traffic volumes.

The pattern suggests that families often want something concrete: a worksheet for practice, a test to see what a student can do, a textbook explanation, or a past paper that makes an assessment feel less unknown. These resources can be useful before, during and after tutoring.

Free resources and one-to-one help do different jobs

  • A worksheet provides practice. A tutor can diagnose why the student is making the same error.
  • A past paper shows the assessment. A tutor can help the student plan, select methods and review mistakes.
  • A textbook explains the content. A tutor can change the explanation when the first version does not land.

The digital analysis excludes non-Australian traffic from interpretation and focuses on public learning-resource paths rather than portals, staff pages or internal systems. Absolute traffic figures are deliberately omitted because analytics can include automated activity and because website scale is not the subject of this report.

10. A practical checklist for parents

You do not need to become an education researcher to judge a tutoring arrangement. The following questions are enough to make the conversation specific.

  1. Name the starting problem. What is the student trying to understand, complete or feel more confident about?
  2. Keep one example. Save a test, work sample or short set of questions that shows the starting point.
  3. Ask what happened in the lesson. What was covered, what could the student do, where were prompts needed, and what comes next?
  4. Watch independence. Can the student begin, explain and check with less help than before?
  5. Check transfer. Is the skill appearing in classwork, homework, tests or teacher feedback?
  6. Review the fit. Does the student feel safe asking questions, and can the tutor explain clearly?
  7. Review the rhythm. Is the schedule calm and repeatable enough to support learning?
  8. Change course if needed. A tutor change, different format or narrower goal can be sensible. It is not a failure.

Important limitations

  • This is one provider’s operational evidence, not a representative national survey of all tutoring.
  • Lesson-note themes are tutor observations and keyword matches, not standardised educational assessments.
  • Theme categories overlap. A single note, call or testimonial can contain several themes.
  • Approved testimonials are selected positive feedback and cannot estimate the proportion of all families who improved.
  • The call transcript sample is not the company’s complete call history and is used qualitatively only.
  • No causal claim is made. A change in marks, confidence or engagement may have several causes.
  • Location fields were incomplete, so no regional market ranking is published.
  • Digital filters reduce non-Australian and non-public traffic, but analytics cannot perfectly identify every automated visit.
  • Student gender was not analysed because the available operational field was not reliable enough for publication.

Privacy and independence

The report uses aggregated records. No student, parent or tutor is identified in lesson, enquiry or call evidence. Testimonial excerpts come from approved records and were anonymised. EzyMath connects families with independent tutors. The Fit – Rhythm – Focus framework describes how a tutoring relationship can begin well; it does not prescribe how an independent tutor must teach.
