Year 5 NAPLAN Numeracy includes three free Ezy Math practice tests. Each card names the question paper and worked solutions, including separate calculator files where the year level requires them.

 

Year 5 children usually know the NAPLAN routine, so practice can shift towards explaining choices and taking more responsibility for checking work.

 

As your child takes more responsibility for practice, this page helps you look beyond a Numeracy total. The worked steps can show whether your child misunderstood the question, chose the wrong operation, made a calculation slip or forgot to check the answer.

Year 5 NAPLAN Numeracy practice tests

Start with the question paper and keep the worked solutions closed until your child finishes. Do not interrupt to correct mistakes. During a Year 5 attempt, let your child choose a method and show enough working for you to follow it later.

 

Open the matching answer key and worked solutions after the attempt so your child can compare methods, units and checking steps.

 

During your child’s explanation, keep the working, units and calculator choices visible so you can see where the method changed direction.

What Year 5 NAPLAN Numeracy covers

NAPLAN Numeracy draws on number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. These practice tests help your child recognise the mathematics, choose a method, show enough working to understand an error, and check whether the answer is reasonable.

 

NAPLAN Numeracy assesses the application of mathematical knowledge, skills, procedures and processes. Official descriptions cover number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability, with understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning all involved.

 

Year 5 Numeracy is online and can include multiple-choice, text-entry and technology-enhanced items. The practice review should preserve working even where the final answer is entered digitally.

 

The six cards below explain the main parts of Year 5 Numeracy in parent-friendly terms. Read the cards that match what you saw in your child’s work. You do not need to explain every mistake or use every card.

 

Compared with Year 3, Year 5 Numeracy asks for more independence and more explanation of the choices made.

 

Year 5 questions ask children to connect more ideas within one problem and explain why a method fits, rather than rely on a familiar key word.

Year 5 Numeracy skill map

1. Whole numbers and efficient operations

What this part checks: Comparing and representing larger whole numbers, using all four operations, and choosing an efficient method for single-step and multi-step problems.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Solve a problem with more than one operation, identify a missing value, or decide which calculation represents the situation.

 

What to look for afterwards: Did the student preserve place value, choose the operations in a logical order, and estimate before accepting the result?

2. Fractions, decimals and part-whole thinking

What this part checks: Comparing fractions, recognising equivalent fractions, finding a fraction of a quantity, and connecting tenths and hundredths with decimals.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Find three quarters of a collection, compare two fractions, or represent a shaded amount as a decimal.

 

What to look for afterwards: Did the student identify the whole, use equal parts and connect the denominator to the size or number of those parts?

3. Patterns and number sentences

What this part checks: Continuing additive and multiplicative patterns, interpreting simple number sentences, and finding unknown values.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Determine the rule in a pattern, choose the number sentence for a word problem, or fill an unknown in an addition or multiplication relationship.

 

What to look for afterwards: Can the student explain the rule in words and test it more than once? Did they treat the equals sign as a balance rather than an instruction?

4. Metric measurement, perimeter, area and time

What this part checks: Reading scaled instruments, using common metric units, comparing area, calculating simple perimeter and duration, and interpreting calendars or timetables.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Read a measurement between labelled marks, find the perimeter of a rectangle, or calculate how long an activity lasts.

 

What to look for afterwards: Was the interval on the scale counted correctly? Did the student distinguish perimeter from area and convert time units where needed?

5. Geometry, angles and maps

What this part checks: Classifying two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, recognising symmetry, comparing angles and following locations or pathways on maps.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Identify a net or view, compare an angle with a right angle, or use grid references and directions to locate a feature.

 

What to look for afterwards: Did the student use geometric properties and check the drawing carefully? Were row-column order and direction maintained?

6. Data displays and probability language

What this part checks: Interpreting and comparing tables, column graphs and picture graphs, choosing relevant information, and describing chance in context.

 

What your child may be asked to do: Compare two categories across a graph, use a key with a one-to-many scale, or order events from least to most likely.

 

What to look for afterwards: Did the student check the axis, scale and key? Did their chance description fit all the information rather than one imagined outcome?

Illustrative problem: see how the explanation should work

Three quarters of 32 library books are fiction. How many fiction books are there?

A clear method finds one quarter first: 32 ÷ 4 = 8. It then finds three quarters: 8 x 3 = 24. The review should distinguish a fraction concept gap from a multiplication error.

 

This Numeracy example is separate from the practice tests, so you can discuss it without giving away an answer from the papers.

 

Let your child lead part of the discussion and explain the choice in their own words. Ask why the operation or relationship fits before discussing the calculation. The explanation will often show whether the mathematics is understood. You can also ask: Which step made the answer more or less reasonable?

After Practice Test 1: Year 5 Numeracy

Ask your child to explain one successful choice and one answer they would now change, rather than reporting only a total.

 

Ask: Which step made the answer more or less reasonable?

  • On the first review, redo one missed question without looking at the answer, then compare the two methods.
  • For the practice session, change the numbers in that question and see whether your child can use the same idea again.
  • Before choosing another test, ask for an estimate or another check that would have caught the original error.

Do not turn every missed question into homework. Choose one repeated problem that you can explain clearly, then practise it in a small task.

 

Agree on a specific skill and a checking habit, then let your child help decide when to try the next set.

Your role with a Year 5 child

  • Ask the student what they remember about the assessment before supplying an explanation.
  • Agree on a realistic session length and break point.
  • Let the student flag uncertain questions rather than seeking immediate adult confirmation.

These figures describe results across Australia. They do not explain what happened in your child’s attempt. During your child’s explanation, keep the working, units and calculator choices visible so you can see where the method changed direction.

For a child building independence, use the national figures only as background. Your child’s working will give you better information about what to teach or practise next.

 

A total from an Ezy Math Year 5 Numeracy practice test is not an official NAPLAN scale score. When you plan the next practice, use your child’s work rather than a comparison with the national percentage.

When you review the first paper together, start with the working. Find the first step where the method stopped matching the problem, then check whether the same kind of issue appears elsewhere.

When should my child open Year 5 Numeracy Practice Test 2?

Return after focused practice and ask what your child plans to do differently before opening the paper. Once the agreed practice is complete, choose one mathematical idea and one checking habit from the first paper. Give both time to improve before using another complete test.
