How much tutoring does your child need?

IB Maths AA and AI cover the same five broad areas, but they use mathematics in different ways. AA gives more weight to algebraic reasoning, mathematical structure and analytical techniques. AI gives more weight to modelling, data, practical applications and technology. Neither choice should be made from the name alone.

How to compare IB Maths AA and AI

Use the table as a starting point, then compare the official subject briefs, assessment conditions and a small sample of questions. A safe choice considers mathematical preference, present preparation, level, workload and future requirements together instead of relying on a single label.

The unfiltered bottom line

  • Neither course is simply the easy option. AA and AI share core areas but assess a different balance of analysis, modelling and technology.
  • The level matters as much as the name. AA SL, AA HL, AI SL and AI HL carry different depth, workload and assessment demands.
  • Don’t guess about prerequisites. Check current university requirements for the intended entry year and confirm unclear wording with admissions.

What both courses have in common

Both AA and AI include number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. Both ask students to communicate mathematics clearly, solve unfamiliar problems and complete an internal mathematical exploration. Both also require students to understand technology and become proficient with a graphic display calculator.

The difference is the balance and the way the ideas are used. A student can’t decide safely by saying that one course contains calculus and the other doesn’t, or that one course uses calculators and the other doesn’t. Those shortcuts are inaccurate.

Who may prefer Analysis and Approaches?

AA may suit you if you like algebraic manipulation, patterns, general rules and explaining why a technique works. It asks you to construct and communicate mathematical arguments and become comfortable with analytical methods. This doesn’t mean every future science or engineering student must automatically choose AA HL. The required course and level depend on the university program and your preparation.

Who may prefer Applications and Interpretation?

AI may suit you if you like using mathematics to describe a real situation, working with data, testing a model and interpreting a result. Technology is woven through the course, so you need to understand what the calculator is doing and whether its output makes sense. AI still requires algebra, functions and calculus. Don’t choose it on the assumption that technology removes the need for mathematical understanding.

Make a safe course and level decision

The subject name is only one part of the decision. Confirm the level, the version of the curriculum and any pathway requirement before enrolment. Use current sources and discuss uncertainties with people who can verify the choice for your school and intended study.

SL or HL is a separate decision

After choosing AA or AI, students must also choose standard level or higher level. The IB recommends more teaching time for HL and assesses greater breadth and depth. A course name and a level work together, so AA SL and AA HL aren’t interchangeable, and neither are AI SL and AI HL. Consider current achievement, available teaching support, the rest of the Diploma workload and future prerequisites.

Check university requirements directly

University requirements aren’t universal. A degree may require a particular IB mathematics course, a particular level, a minimum result or an approved alternative. Requirements can also change before a student applies. Check the exact university course page for the intended entry year. If the wording is unclear, ask the university admissions team and discuss the answer with the school’s IB coordinator or careers adviser.

Check the assessment year

The subject briefs linked above describe the courses first assessed in May 2021. The IB has announced updated AA and AI courses for first assessment in May 2029. Students in the changeover period should confirm which course version their school is teaching and use the matching brief, guide and assessment information from the live IB curriculum page.

A practical way to decide

  1. Read both official subject briefs and compare the assessment model.
  2. Look at a few AA and AI specimen questions without trying to judge the course from one question.
  3. List the university courses you may apply for and check their current prerequisites.
  4. Discuss your recent mathematics results, working style and workload with your teacher or IB coordinator.
  5. Choose the course and level that keeps needed pathways open and gives you a realistic chance to learn well.

The short answer: choose AA for a stronger emphasis on analysis and mathematical argument, or AI for a stronger emphasis on modelling and interpretation. Then verify the level against your preparation and future plans.
