Year 9 NAPLAN Numeracy includes three free Ezy Math practice tests. Each card names the question paper and worked solutions, including separate calculator files where the year level requires them.
Year 9 practice works best as a student-led check, not a parent-run revision program. The student should decide what the evidence means and what is worth changing.
With the student leading this final NAPLAN year, this page helps you look beyond a Numeracy total. The worked steps can show whether your child misunderstood the question, chose the wrong operation, made a calculation slip or forgot to check the answer.
Year 9 NAPLAN Numeracy practice tests
Start with the question paper and keep the worked solutions closed until your child finishes. Do not interrupt to correct mistakes. For student-led Year 9 practice, let your child choose a method and show enough working for you to follow it later.

When the student analyses the attempt, keep the working, units and calculator choices visible so you can see where the method changed direction.

For a student-led starting point, use the working to see how your child chooses operations, handles units and checks answers. Have the student predict likely strengths and risks, then complete the paper under conditions they can manage independently.

What Year 9 NAPLAN Numeracy covers
NAPLAN Numeracy draws on number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. These practice tests help your child recognise the mathematics, choose a method, show enough working to understand an error, and check whether the answer is reasonable.
NAPLAN Numeracy assesses the application of mathematical knowledge, skills, procedures and processes. Official descriptions cover number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability, with understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning all involved.
Year 9 includes a short locked non-calculator section followed by a calculator-available section. Practice therefore needs both reliable arithmetic and sensible calculator use.
The six cards below explain the main parts of Year 9 Numeracy in parent-friendly terms. Read the cards that match what you saw in your child’s work. You do not need to explain every mistake or use every card.
Compared with Year 7, Year 9 Numeracy asks for more independence and more explanation of the choices made.
Year 9 students need to set up less familiar problems, choose efficient methods and judge whether a result is reasonable in context.

Year 9 Numeracy skill map
1. Rates, ratios, percentages and proportional change
What this part checks: Solving multi-step problems with rates, ratios and percentages, including percentage increase, decrease and repeated comparison.
What your child may be asked to do: Compare two rates, calculate a percentage change from an original value, or scale a quantity while preserving a ratio.
What to look for afterwards: Did the student choose the correct comparison base and keep units consistent? Is the direction and size of the answer plausible?
2. Number, indices and non-calculator control
What this part checks: Calculating with integers, fractions and decimals, using prime factors, indices and order of operations, and selecting efficient non-calculator methods.
What your child may be asked to do: Simplify a calculation with powers, express a number as prime factors, or complete a multi-operation calculation without technology.
What to look for afterwards: Were signs and operation order controlled? Could estimation or factorisation have reduced the calculation load?
3. Expressions, substitution and linear equations
What this part checks: Representing relationships algebraically, simplifying and factorising expressions, substituting values and solving linear equations.
What your child may be asked to do: Translate a context into an expression, evaluate it for a given value, solve an equation, or match a linear rule with a graph.
What to look for afterwards: Can the student explain each transformation and verify the solution in the original equation or context?
4. Measurement, area, volume and scale
What this part checks: Converting units, using formulas for perimeter, area, volume and capacity, and applying scale in maps and diagrams.
What your child may be asked to do: Find the area of a composite shape, calculate a volume, convert square or cubic units, or determine a real distance from a scale.
What to look for afterwards: Did the student identify the required measure before selecting a formula? Were dimensions and units handled consistently?
5. Geometry, coordinates and transformations
What this part checks: Applying angle properties, Pythagorean or geometric reasoning where appropriate, interpreting coordinates and analysing transformations or spatial views.
What your child may be asked to do: Determine an unknown angle, locate a relationship on a Cartesian plane, or describe the position and orientation of an image after a transformation.
What to look for afterwards: Was the geometric property explicit? Did the student rely on measurement from a diagram that may not be drawn to scale?
6. Statistics, probability and critical data interpretation
What this part checks: Comparing distributions, calculating and interpreting summary statistics, judging displays, and reasoning about probability and samples.
What your child may be asked to do: Explain the effect of an outlier on a mean, compare two displays, interpret a misleading scale, or calculate the probability of a combined event.
What to look for afterwards: Did the student distinguish centre from spread, read the sample and axes carefully, and avoid claiming more than the data supports?
Illustrative problem: see how the explanation should work
A quantity increases from 240 to 282. What is the percentage increase?
The increase is 42. Divide the change by the original amount: 42 ÷ 240 = 0.175, or 17.5%. A common mistake is dividing by the new amount, so the explanation should identify the correct comparison base.
This example is separate from the practice tests, so you can discuss it without giving away an answer from the papers.
Have the student question the explanation and suggest where it could be clearer or stronger. Ask why the operation or relationship fits before discussing the calculation. The explanation will often show whether the mathematics is understood. You can also ask: Which step made the answer more or less reasonable?
After Practice Test 1: Year 9 Numeracy
Ask the student to compare the prediction with the result and defend the two priorities selected for further work.
Ask: Which step made the answer more or less reasonable?
- For the analysis, redo one missed question without looking at the answer, then compare the two methods.
- In the selected practice, change the numbers in that question and see whether your child can use the same idea again.
- Before using the last paper, ask for an estimate or another check that would have caught the original error.
Do not turn every missed question into homework. Choose one repeated problem that you can explain clearly, then practise it in a small task.
Keep the plan selective and relevant to secondary study; more full tests will not teach a skill that has not been understood.
Your role with a Year 9 child
- Agree on the purpose of practice with the student before selecting a test.
- Ask the student to predict strengths and risks, then compare that prediction with the evidence.
- Require a specific review of errors rather than a report of the total score alone.

These figures describe results across Australia. They do not explain what happened in your child’s attempt. When the student analyses the attempt, keep the working, units and calculator choices visible so you can see where the method changed direction.
With future secondary work in mind, use the national figures only as background. Your child’s working will give you better information about what to teach or practise next.
A total from an Ezy Math Year 9 Numeracy practice test is not an official NAPLAN scale score. When this final NAPLAN year is put in perspective, use your child’s work rather than a comparison with the national percentage.

What should I notice first in a Year 9 Numeracy attempt?
When the student compares predictions with the work, start with the working. Find the first step where the method stopped matching the problem, then check whether the same kind of issue appears elsewhere.
When should my child open Year 9 Numeracy Practice Test 2?
Open another set only after the student can describe the work completed and the change they expect to see. When the student can state what should improve and why, choose one mathematical idea and one checking habit from the first paper. Give both time to improve before using another complete test.
