Use the papers to learn the pace and range of the test. The GAT measures broad literacy, numeracy, mathematics, science, technology, arts and humanities skills rather than a single school subject.

How to use VCE GAT Past Papers
Use each paper to see how you make decisions under time, not to estimate a school-subject grade. Sort mistakes into reading, reasoning, calculation and pacing. Ask what went wrong first, because that is the habit or skill your next practice set should test.
The unfiltered bottom line
- One hard item isn’t worth several easy ones. Set a sensible limit, eliminate what you can and return later if the next step is still unclear.
- An option can be right for the wrong reason. Show brief working on numeracy items and identify purpose, audience or tone on literacy items.
- The correct letter isn’t useful feedback. Record whether the error came from reading, method, timing or an unsupported change of mind.
1. Practise the two sections separately first
Begin with one section so you can learn its question styles without fatigue changing the result. Mark it, group your mistakes and repeat a similar set. Once your accuracy is steady, complete both sections under the official time conditions so you can practise concentration as well as question solving.
2. Don’t get trapped by one difficult question
The GAT covers a wide range of material, so some questions will feel less familiar. Set a sensible time limit, eliminate options you can rule out and move on if the next step isn’t clear. Return later if time permits. One stubborn item should not cost you several easier opportunities.
3. Show your reasoning on numeracy questions
Even when the final response is selected from options, write a few steps beside the question. Label units, estimate the likely size of the answer and check if a graph uses an unusual scale. These habits make careless errors easier to spot before you commit to an option.
4. Read for purpose and tone
In literacy questions, ask who produced the text, what the writer wants the audience to think or do, and which details create that effect. For paired texts, identify one clear point of agreement or difference before comparing individual sentences. This gives the details a useful frame.
5. Review wrong answers by cause
Don’t record only the correct letter. Decide whether you misread the question, lacked a method, rushed a calculation or changed a sound answer without evidence. Different causes need different fixes. Reattempt the question later without looking at your old work to test the fix.
Use the four papers deliberately: Use the 2022 to 2025 papers as a small cycle rather than consuming them all at once. Learn the format with one paper, target weak question types with the next, then keep the newest paper for a complete timed rehearsal. The aim is calm decision-making across unfamiliar material.
