What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

I'm someone who has always enjoyed learning, even as a child: I know that's a rare quality! Teaching, I see as the opposite side of the coin to learning: you can't have one without the other. As a teacher or tutor, I most enjoy when I'm able to instil the same enthusiasm for the subject/learning in general as I had when I was in the student's place.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

I have a great deal of technical knowledge, and beside that, through my PhD and tutoring experience, I've also learned much about conveying that information in an understandable level, bringing it "to the student's level". I also pride myself on being a kind, patient and reasonable person who can adapt to any situation or personality type.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

As I alluded to earlier, I think the student's enjoyment is extremely important. That's not to say that they should be having fun at the expense of gaining knowledge, much the contrary; I think the best way for a student to gain knowledge that will last beyond the next test or exam is to have it conveyed in such a way that they take a genuine interest in it, or a passion for it if possible. I think a tutor should always be encouraging a student, finding ways to connect with them and connect what is being taught with their own interest and learning style.

We particularly went over the areas in which I've tutored Liam over the past few months (volume/surface area of solids, and network analysis) as he was confident with the rest. He was able to remember in general how to solve most problems and upon being reminded solved the problems himself with minimal input from me.

Needs Improvement

There were some procedures for networks that Liam didn't remember or struggled with - particularly the procedure for finding the shortest path. I'd recommend more practice at this before his exam.

This will be our last lesson as Michael has his exam this week. He has been an excellent student and I've been impressed with his understanding of the concepts and the way he's worked on areas he was struggling with. Today's lesson was an excellent example, as he was able to tell me the next step to almost every question. I have confidence he'll be able to work through similar questions in an exam setting.

Needs Improvement

Michael's last remaining struggle is sometimes not getting the "trick" to an open question (for example, not knowing which rule needs to be applied to solve an integral). This only comes with practice so continued revising will help. Otherwise, I wish him the best of luck for his exam and, again, am certain he'll do well.

Michael did well today despite being ill. The questions we went through were both on the extremely difficult, "A+ question" level, combining multiple concepts and topics. Michael was able to follow all the working and had some good answers for which step was needed next, so I'm confident he can get at least partial marks on these sorts of questions.

Needs Improvement

No particular areas of concern. A+ questions are always challenging since they require lateral thought to figure out the next step or what mathematical concepts need to be used, so further practice at those questions will never hurt.

Despite missing a few weeks of tutoring due to various commitments, Liam is keeping up with his class work very well. He was familiar with the equations he needs to use for calculating interest, followed my explanations and was able to solve problems independently. Very well done!

Needs Improvement

Very little - just further practice on further details such as knowing when to multiply or divide by the number of days/months.
