The most important things a tutor can do for a student is first and foremost to be patient and never give a student the feeling that he/she won’t be able to do a certain tasks or in general become better at a certain subject. Moreover you should be really flexible in the way you teach things, because everybody learns and understand things…

Apart from the obvious requirements to provide sound academic knowledge and advice, the other aspect of tutoring that I consider most important is getting the student excited about learning. The best teachers have a successful balance of both aspects. When a tutor is excited about the content, that will get the student excited as well. An…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student can vary, depending on the student. For e.g I had a friend who's outlook on maths was very negative, he had despised it his whole life and every time we'd have maths h would just have a frown upon his face and his mood would change. I assumed this was because he had never really…

One of the most important thing a tutor can do is to help a student to acquire the knowledge. What it means is that the student can internally understand what is being taught as a building block, which enables the student to advance his/her learning. An important aspect of acquiring knowledge is to teach student how to think. As different…

I think that the most important things that a tutor can do for a student would be to inspire them to love the subjects that they take and study, to be able to inspire them to do their work and really work at it in their own time, such that the tutoring isn't a dependency but a supplement to their success. Once that's achieved, it becomes much…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be there for them not only as a teacher but also as a friend. I think communication is one of the most crucial skills. I believe every students, somehow, are capable of learning. So even though I don't have extraordinary skills to teach them, they will learn from my explanation. But I have to know where they are at the point of time to know exactly what and how I have to teach. Having an idea of what my…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is remove some of the stigma the student already holds towards the subject. I think the most important thing for a tutor is to genuinely care about the student. When a student feels supported and encouraged, they're more likely to stay motivated and engaged. It’s not just about explaining concepts—it’s about building confidence, helping them develop problem-solving skills, and making sure they feel comfortable…

Inside MosmanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zara worked through volume and unit conversions, practising with real-world measurement examples.

In Year 9, Sam tackled expanding polynomials and reducing fractions step-by-step using practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia focused on analysing the function domain and range as well as applying function notation to problem-solving exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 English, one student avoided answering addition questions that involved carrying numbers and chose only easier homework problems, as a tutor noted: "She completed long addition questions that did not need carrying."

In Year 7 Maths, another student repeatedly guessed answers and waited for feedback instead of showing his own working, leading to less independent problem-solving.

A Year 10 student left assigned pre-reading for an English play unfinished, which meant class time was spent explaining context rather than tackling questions.

When homework or in-class note-taking is skipped or incomplete, valuable practice and test preparation opportunities are lost.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mosman noted that one high school student, Lachy, has become much more proactive about his learning—he now arrives well prepared for English sessions and is able to answer most questions independently, a shift from previous lessons where he relied more on guidance.

Another older student, Ollie, recently completed over 90% of a mock maths test quickly and correctly after showing much sharper recall of both new and old concepts; previously, he struggled with formula recollection under pressure.

Meanwhile, in a younger session, Theo stopped guessing at spelling tasks and instead began checking for the "ty" ending in number words—a change from earlier lessons when he'd give up or guess randomly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mosman Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mosman High School.
