What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I enjoy talking to students about what they are interested in, helping them through their challenges. I had a female student who I was tutoring for mathematics. She wasn't sure whether engineering was what she wanted to do, as she wasn't confident in her maths skills but also had heard there was a lack of women in the field. I tutored her for 6 months in Mathematical Methods and by the end she said she was finding her maths easier and even considering engineering as a potential option for university! It was such a great feeling!
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I think my patience and commitment as a tutor are key strengths. I believe everybody learns at different rates and in different ways. Keeping this in mind I aim to not rush students and ensure they understand before we move on. I'm willing to spend extra time with those that need it. I believe another strength of mine is my communication skills. I love public speaking - I try to take the ideas students learn in the classroom and explain them in a more approachable way.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a mentor, allowing the student to chat to you about what they're interested in. Helping them find subjects/ extracurricular activities they're passionate about I think is something that I think kids prefer talking to people our age about and which we can offer guidance. Another important thing is giving them the tools to learn things on their own. Ultimately, their class time is limited and one tutoring session cannot be something the students rely on for their learning, hence providing resources is important.

Haydn was able to understand the majority of the content presented tonight. We completed a few practice problems from areas he was having trouble with. He was able to differentiate by first principles with some guidance. He was also able to solve definite integrals and find the equation of the normal.
Some more practice with differentiation by first principles and finding the equation of the tangent. I've set some practice problems to assist with this.

- Haydn was able to recall exact values fairly well after some practice. I think he would benefit from having a look at the special triangles method that his teacher has taught him. This will mean he won't have to recall things under pressure but rather have a reliable mathematical method. - He was able to graph the equations of sin and cos with some guidance - He was also able to explain some of the concepts in his own words
- Graphing: Having a method that he follows each time could assist. I gave him a couple of steps but perhaps good for us to revise before the exam. - Practice solving circular equations

Able to teach Amesha an alternative method to finding the equation of a line. Ameesha was able to use this method to answer the practice questions. She was also able to use the method taught in class to answer a few practice questions, but thinks the alternative is much better.
I think Ameesha needs some help filling in the gaps. That is, for content covered in Year 9. I have emailed the team to request a diagnostic assessment for Year 9. Once received, I will send to her parents so that she can complete this before next lesson.
Haydn was able to recognise his mistakes and understand where he went wrong. He answered the graphing questions quite well. He also has improved his long division.

Haydn needs some support under test conditions. I noticed he seems like a smart kid but tends to rush things and is trying to get stuck into the question very quickly. He also seemed to be second guessing himself and talking things over very rapidly. I'm not too sure what to suggest, I'll have a think over the week as to how I can best support Haydn in this area. But I'd say overall he needs to be clear in his mind what he's trying to do 'before' he does it, have confidence that it's the right approach, and take things one step at a time, rather than trying to answer the whole problem in one hit. Any strategies he can use to help relax during these situations as well could help. Skills wise, I've made a list of a couple of topics that would be good for him to revise. Good luck with your practice exam Haydn!
