I think one of the most important things an english tutor can do is build a student's confidence. When students believe they can understand the material, they're much more willing to try difficult problems and improve, which can help improve their problem solving skills for future topics in high school and beyond. I think one of my strengths is…

A tutor should be a mentor. They are someone who can guide a student and give real advice. This means they are approachable in and beyond the classroom setting. Being interactive is another must. The student should be solving the problems simply with the tutor's guidance. Tutors must also encourage the student to feel comfortable asking questions…

I think the most important things an english tutor can do for a student is to show them that studying can be fun. Although it can be frustrating for students to struggle at particular topics or questions, I have learnt how to make sessions less stressful by trying to use various worksheets or methods of teaching to suit the student's needs. I have…

I believe it is important that you help students on both an academic and personal level. Fostering self-belief and establishing a growth mindset within students are key priorities of mine as these are invaluable life skills that go beyond the classroom. Furthermore, one of the most meaningful contributions that I can make as an english tutor is…

Active learning occurs when the session is lively and there is healthy communication between the tutor and student. Ensuring this while maintaining the quality is important Taking the students point of view into account whenever they're tackling a problem and building on it instead of telling them they're incorrect if the initial steps are…

I believe taking ample effort in preplanning lessons, thinking about the topic for different perspectives is vey important. The most important thing, I think is to stick with the student till they understand the topic and not race through the course plan. I think I am very creative in approaching problems. I think the most important things an english tutor can do is make their student feel like coming to their class and really being able to learn something. Also, tutors need to make learning an enjoyable and fulfilling experience for students. I have great communication skills, especially with younger…

The most important thing a tutor can do is connect with their student not just as an instructor, but as someone they can genuinely relate to and feel comfortable with. From there, it is about listening carefully, not just to the answers a student gives, but to the hesitation before it, because that's usually where the real gap is. The job is not…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is guiding them to effectively study to understand concepts in detail. No matter what subject we learn, there is always some type of technique that may slightly vary but is ultimately very similar in nature. Once students can grasp that technique, they should be able to gain essential skills…

Inside GirraweenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Joseph worked on place value and rounding numbers, as well as identifying prime and composite numbers using hands-on number exercises.

Year 8 student Rory tackled linear relationships by exploring the y = mx + c form and practiced solving algebraic equations with substitution.

For Year 10, Nancy focused on financial maths concepts including simple interest calculations and was introduced to compound interest problems through step-by-step examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student often copied notes quickly and "would miss a sign or two because he go past too fast," leading to errors in factorising tasks and missed steps in quadratic problems.

In upper primary mathematics, another student repeatedly defaulted to using algorithms for multiplication rather than trying mental strategies, slowing progress on multi-step questions and making it harder to spot mistakes—especially when asked to convert mixed numbers or simplify fractions.

During NAPLAN practice, incomplete written working meant key problem-solving steps were forgotten, causing avoidable confusion and extra time spent re-reading questions instead of moving forward confidently.

Recent Achievements

A Girraween tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask questions is now openly requesting help with tricky algebra steps, instead of quietly guessing—especially during lessons on factorising quadratics.

Another high schooler made a leap in Maths: after weeks of uncertainty, she managed to self-correct her mistakes when converting improper fractions to mixed numbers, even explaining her thinking aloud for the first time.

In a primary session, one student surprised his tutor by identifying and pronouncing words correctly while reading aloud—a marked change from earlier reluctance to attempt unfamiliar vocabulary.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Constitution Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Girraween Public School.
