We have all had the experience of a "bad teacher" and we know it's not pleasant. Often the teacher is simply a bad match for that particular student rather than being a "bad teacher" in general but in either case the student has a serious problem. This is why many parents contact us for a private tutor - their child just can't "get it" when their teacher is teaching. It's incredible how one explanation results in more confusion whereas another results in that...

It's incredible how one explanation results in more confusion whereas another results in that "aha" feeling we all love so much! It is really a matter of getting the "right" tutor and not the "best" one. We see this every day in our work. A tutor might have hundreds of hours of experience and might have received dozens of testimonials from students, however, even such a tutor doesn't click with all students. Every tutor gets bad feedback sometimes. It's all about getting the right fit and this is what we do!

The proof is always in the action, to get an idea of how tutoring works in practice check out some feedback from tutors. Typically tutors focus on strategies needed to make progress, what's going well and what needs improvement. Of course, every tutor has their own unique style that is tailored to your child's specific needs.
Max is attaining positive improvement in the following learning strategies: Talking aloud, self-confidence, seeking understanding, and avoiding lazy thinking. Max needs to improve in: Back checking, pen to paper, formatting skills, self questioning, avoiding rule dependence, note-taking, good corrections, and transferring skills.
Willing to learn, steadily building up the rapport and making sure he is having fun and understanding the real-world applications of the maths that is being taught. Is putting in all the effort within our lessons, is bringing issues up easily and is working through the problems. Needs to try and set out the work in a manageable way, so he can see the links between the different questions being asked. This will be a good focus point moving forward.
I have noticed that Lauren has slight confusion over Leibniz Notation (e.g. y f(x)) and graphing polynomial functions. As mentioned above, Lauren continues to have some problems with Leibniz Notation and graphing polynomial functions. I encourage her to think logically through the notation and the procedure for graphing polynomial functions. This will take practice and in future sessions, I will emphasis thinking logically through problems.

We are all very happy with Rebecca. Myself, my husband and especially Grace, which is wonderful. Rebecca and Grace's school teacher have spoken via email and are working together. I think it is too early to see any real progress, as you said we would expect to see a difference in the next couple of months. But for now we are glad Grace is getting the help she needs while enjoying the company of Rebecca.
Mitch has been so wonderful with Nick and is doing an amazing job tutoring Nick, especially getting Nick focused on completing his maths homework. He has worked with Nick so well and has established a great working relationship with him. His patient demeanor is certainly a strong attribute and has made tutoring for Nick so much easier. Nick has commented several times that 'he has learnt more with Mitch today than he has all week with his teacher'.
I am delighted with Domenic's tutoring. I was concerned about how the tutoring would go because Jake struggles with a high level of anxiety but Domenic has put him at his ease. He has engaged very well with my son, and is enthusiastic, encouraging, knowledgable and organised. He explains concepts in a way that Jake can grasp them: Jake has had at least one 'ah-ha' moment in every session. Domenic is also always punctual and polite. He has made a big difference already to Jett's confidence and performance at Maths. I look forward to having him continue to tutor Jake through his HSC.
